Aims:  The Workshop will start with a theoretical introduction, and an overview on West Nile Virus (WNV) infection will be delivered. This introductory part will include the clinical presentations of the West Nile disease in humans, followed by the state-of-the-art laboratory tests applied for the detection of the WNV, concluding to surveillance data and public control actions based on the WNV infection in humans in Greece.

The case study in the afternoon will introduce you to the Public Health Microbiology. It will be facilitated EUPHEM (European Public Health Microbiology –programme organized by ECDC) supervisors, current fellows and alumni. As a medical virology, bacteriology or clinical scientist trainee or consultant, you are likely to be familiar with the laboratory investigations and the management of cases of emerging infection occurring within the hospitals and other health-care facilities. This case study will not only endorse your prior knowledge but also introduce you to the additional tools used for epidemiological investigations. It will demonstrate the importance of multi-disciplinary approach in any investigations. At the end of the case study, you will be able to outline the main steps used for a cross-sectional epidemiological studies to estimate prevalence, explain the principles of sampling, select a sampling approach that is adapted to study objectives, calculate sample size, calculate sampling weights and interpret the results of a cross-sectional survey.


Target Audience: Medical virology, bacteriology or clinical scientist trainees. Good preparation and revision for your Virology/FRCPath exams!


Registration: Attendance of the Workshop is FREE OF CHARGE for the ESCV 2018 participants. Since places are limited to eighty (80), online registration is required and selection will be made on a “first come-first served” basis. Registration opens on February 1st, 2018 until May 31st 2018 or until completion of the required number of participants. All successful applicants will be notified via e-mail one week after the finalization of their Workshop registration.
